YouTube to spend $200 million more on professional videos

The site initially spend $150 million to acquire talent for original programming, and now wants to market it more effectively to the target audience.YouTube is ready to dump more cash into its professional programming, according to a new report.
Google-owned YouTube will drop another $200 million into the programming to more effectively market the nearly 100 channels boasting professional videos, the company told the Wall Street Journal in a report published yesterday.
The Journal is reporting today, citing sources, that YouTube has so far attracted $150 million worth of advertising to its original programming. That investment, if it carries throughout the year, would help cover the startup costs YouTube incurred to get its programming off the ground

Facebook needs a new CEO

By John C Abell July 26, 2012
Facebook has now gone through its first trial by fire as a public company, slightly exceeding revenue expectations (with $1.18 billion) but showing a big loss in its first reported quarter ($157 million). Facebook shares were pummeled in after-hours trading; the company’s market cap has been slashed in half in just 10 weeks.
This is a bad, bad situation for Facebook’s early shareholders, 97% of whom are individual, retail investors – unlike those at the other big tech titans, which are majority-held by institutions: Google (68%) and Apple (67%). That Facebook’s percentage is so high suggests that Facebook is a stock for the masses. The masses need a hero.

Eminem's new record: More than 60 million Facebook 'Likes'

Eminem is the first person in the world to receive more than 60 million Facebook Likes.
Eminem has more Facebook fans than any other living person, and this week he set a new record: 60 million Facebook Likes. The 39-year-old rapper from Detroit is currently gaining some 24,000 Likes on average per day. The runner-up for the position is Rihanna, who is gaining 26,000 Likes daily.
Putting aside the totals for a second, the growth rates alone are astonishing. One has to wonder how many of these Facebook Likes are being made by fake accounts.

If Rihanna overtakes Eminem, she'll be avenging Lady Gaga, whom Eminem passed earlier last year. That's right: it's been a very slow race. I hinted Rihanna may pass Eminem back in February 2011, and it still hasn't happened.
At the time of writing, here are the top 10 Facebook Pages, courtesy of App Data (via All Facebook):
  1. Facebook for Every Phone with 116.82 million Likes.
  2. Facebook with 70.21 million Likes.
  3. Texas HoldEm Poker with 63.80 million Likes.
  4. YouTube with 61.22 million Likes.
  5. Eminem with 60.08 million Likes.
  6. Rihanna with 59.37 million Likes.
  7. The Simpsons with 53.76 million Likes.
  8. Shakira with 53.35 million Likes.
  9. Lady Gaga with 53.00 million Likes.
  10. Michael Jackson with 51.16 million Likes.
I'm always amused when reminded that the official Facebook for Every Phone Facebook Page is the most popular Facebook Page of all, even more popular than the official Facebook Page for Facebook itself. Sorry, that was quite a thoughtful.
Anyway, back to Marshall Mathers. The rapper probably doesn't realize he made social networking history this week. Then again, that might be a good thing. His street cred would probably take a hit if he took a second to acknowledge his Facebook popularity. Source-CNET

Free Android apps could hijack your phone

Those annoying pop-up ads are back. This time, they're on your smartphone, and they're badder than ever. Here's how you can avoid aggressive adware on your mobile device

Downloading free Android apps could make you vulnerable to aggressive adware, according to San Francisco-based security firm Lookout.

In fact, as much as five percent of those free apps have spammy ads that may be parceling out your information to third parties according to CTO Kevin Mahaffey.

That number may seem small at first, but not after you consider how many hundreds of millions of times those free apps are downloaded. To combat the problem, Lookout has developed its own app that scans other apps to tells you which ones are engaging in bad behavior. It's up to you to delete the offender(s).

The Android platform is the Wild West, and the good, the bad and the ugly are all present in abundance. The good, of course, is some seriously creative app development and an open platform that allows for some very cool innovation.

"Groupon discount gifts" titled e-mail maybe malware

by Graham Cluley on July 30, 2012
Cybercriminals have spammed out malware, attached to emails claiming to be related to discounts for offers on Groupon.
The emails, which have the poorly spelt subject line of "Groupon dicount gifts" (in itself something which should ring alarm bells), pretend to come from Groupon, and claim that one of your friends has found a deal on the website.
The website says that your friend has decided to share the deal with you, and that you are receiving a discount code as a result.

Part of the email reads:
Hi there!
You're going to love it
We are glad to inform you that one of your friends has found a great deal on Groupon.com!
And even shared it with you!

Yeah! Now Groupon.com gives an opportunity to share a discount gift with a friend!
Enjoy your discount gift in the attachement and share it with one of your friend as well.
All the details in the file attached. be in a hurry this weekend special is due in 2 days!
Attached to the emails is a file called Gift coupon.zip, which contains a Trojan horse designed to infect Windows computers.
Sophos products detect the malware as Troj/Bredo-ABB and Mal/BredoZp-B.
As always, keep your anti-virus up-to-date and your wits about you. It's easy for anyone to make a professional-looking email using the branding of a well-established website in their attempt to lure you into opening an attached file or clicking on a dangerous web link.

Surface to arrive with Windows 8 on 10/26, says Microsoft

Microsoft's Surface tablet will land on the same date as Windows 8. A lot is riding on Windows 8 and Surface, as Microsoft makes clear in its annual report.
Though it's not exactly an earth-shattering revelation, Microsoft has confirmed that Surface tablets will arrive October 26 along with Windows 8.
"The next version of our operating system, Windows 8, will be generally available on October 26, 2012. At that time, we will begin selling the Surface, a series of Microsoft-designed and manufactured hardware devices," Microsoft said in its annual report filed this week with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Microsoft has said before that Surface products "would be available the same time that Windows 8" was launched, but it's reassuring to see the date in writing.
And, remember, those are Windows RT tablets only. The Intel-based Surface Pro is expected about 90 days later, according to Microsoft.
Microsoft has also peppered disclaimers throughout the annual report (these appear often in SEC filings) about the success, or lack thereof, of Windows 8.

Tablet review: BSNL Penta Tpad WS802C

New Delhi: Public sector telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) had some time back introduced three low cost tablets in India. Manufactured by Noida based Pantel Technologies, the tablets fall in the Rs 3,000-Rs 14,000 price bracket.
We have already done a first hand review of the cheapest BSNL tablet - Penta IS701R. During our first few hours with the costliest BSNL tablet, Penta Tpad WS802C, we liked the device and thought it good value for money.
We further upped the bar during a month long intensive review process to find out its metal and here's how the BSNL Penta Tpad WS802C fared:
Tablet review: BSNL Penta Tpad WS802C
Look and feel
The tablet looks decent in its pure white colour. The plastic body does not inspire much confidence and its slippery surface further makes things worse. So you have to be very careful while handling this 8 inch tablet. Further, there is unnecessary space around the display, which makes it look a lot bigger and you feel like you are handling a 10 inch tablet.
Nonetheless, BSNL and Pantel have provided a number of buttons at convenient positions on the Penta Tpad WS802C. All the ports - 3.5 mm jack, USB, HDMI, reset button, OTG and charging port - are at the lower part of the tablet; the SD card slot, volume rocker and on/off button are on the lower right side while on the left, there is the SIM slot.
There are two speakers on the top back side. You will find the front camera along with four capacitive buttons at the bottom of the display.

LAS VEGAS -- A cell phone battery spontaneously caught fire today, burned through a Defcon attendee's back pants pocket, and fell on the floor, creating burn spots on a carpet and leaving a burn-hole in the attendee's chair.
The man, who asked not to be identified, was not harmed but his trousers were ruined. He told CNET that he was sitting in a session at Defcon around 11:30 a.m. PT when he started to smell something burning and felt some heat underneath him on his seat. He stood up to find that his back left pocket was on fire.

Amazon's Bezos donates $2.5M in support of same-sex marriage

The e-commerce magnate wholeheartedly gives his support to the same-sex marriage campaign in Washington State, donating millions of dollars.
Amazon is the latest tech company to come out in support of same-sex marriage. And judging from the size of founder and CEO Jeff Bezos' whopping $2.5 million donation to defend same-sex marriage in Washington State, there's no mistaking how the e-commerce magnate feels about the cause. This is the largest-ever publicly reported donation to a marriage campaign, according to the Associated Press.

Why Facebook's CEO ought to tell Wall Street to Zuck off

                                                       Mark Zuckerberg in 2010.
                                         (Credit: James Martin/CNET)
The tension between short and long-term thinking leads to very different ideas about how Facebook ought to manage its business.
I'm sure Mark Zuckerberg won't lose any sleep about Wall Street's ongoing hissy fit about Facebook -- nor should he. More about that in a moment.
Following the disappointment over the company's second-quarter earnings, Facebook shares fell another 11.7 percent Friday, despite the market-lifting euphoria over the European Central Bank chief's plans to bolster the Euro.
An extreme sell-off, for sure, but not surprising for a stock that's tumbled almost 38 percent since its star-crossed debut on the NASDAQ in May.

Data of 8.7 million KT subscribers hacked in South Korea

(Reuters) - KT Corp., South Korea's No. 2 wireless service provider, apologized on Sunday after personal data of millions of mobile phone subscribers was hacked.

It is the latest in a string of large-scale personal information hacking cases in one of the world's most wired countries.

Police said two computer programmers had been arrested for hacking personal data of about 8.7 million KT subscribers. KT claims a mobile service subscription membership of 16 million.

Police were also investigating seven others suspected of having purchased and used the hacked KT data, which included names, resident registration numbers and phone numbers.

"We deeply apologize for worrying you," KT said in a statement. The company said it had blocked any further illegal access to data. The hacking began in February.

In November, more than 13 million subscribers of Nexon Korea Corp, a leading game developer, fell victim to a hacking attack.

Months before the Nexon Korea case, information of up to 35 million users of an internet portal and blogging site operated by SK Comms, the country's top mobile service provider, was attacked by hackers from China.

2011 Sony Xpera Devices Not Getting Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

The UK Product Manager for Sony Mobile, John Cooper, has recently been taking questions from their customers on Facebook. This has revealed that both the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S and Xperia Mini Pro will not be receiving the update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Owners of these devices are saddened by this news, but Cooper also states that “they are always developing new phones and making sure that they get the latest updates.”

This is the first official news on the matter, hopefully Sony will make an official statement on their Jelly bean upgrade plans soon. Since both these devices are not getting Android 4.1 Jelly Bean that most likely means that no other Xperia devices from 2011 will be getting an update either. That is just speculation though, there is still hope for other Xperia devices. It is likely that Xperia devices from 2012 will get an update to Jelly Bean, but any official news or timing hasn’t been released or mentioned yet.
Are you sad to hear that these devices won’t be getting an update to Jelly Bean? Will you be getting an upgrade because of this? Let us know in the comments!

Samsung 350 Pixel Per Inch OLED Display Coming Soon?

Samsung is king of OLED and have gotten much praise over some of their displays, but OLED technology is difficult to make in the higher pixel densities that traditional LCDs can achieve.

But a story coming from Korean site etnews states that Samsung has perfected their techniques to produce OLED screens at up to 350 ppi (compared to the iPhone’s 326 ppi Retina displays). Higher pixel densities mean sharper text and images, which generally translates to better looking device displays.

Hopefully this will mean that Samsung phones will be coming with better screens later this year, and that makes us happy. Link- talkandroid

Windows 8 Much More Secure than Windows 7

Researchers Chris Valasek (Senior Security Researcher at Coverity) and Tarjei Mandt (senior vulnerability researcher at Azimuth Security) spend their days seeking ways to compromise security in Windows. They're good guys; if they find a problem they report it, rather than exploiting it for illicit gain. At the Black Hat conference they reported on their analysis of new low-level security features in Windows 8.

The precise details of what they discovered were barely within the realm of my comprehension. Apparently many doubly-linked lists within Windows 8 are now protected by "pool cookies." To avoid exploits that involve forcing arbitrary code or data into places it doesn't belong, Windows 8 randomizes locations for memory allocation and adds "guard pages" as needed. That sort of thing.

In between slides filled with code and intense details, Valasek and Mandt displayed a couple that anybody could understand. The column for Windows Vista was all red, meaning not secure. Windows 7 was close, with just a few green checkmarks. And of course Windows 8 displayed a column of solid green checkmarks. Expert or not, we know that green is good.

Google had warned Samsung from copying Apple's designs

And the juicy details keep flowing in. Like we mentioned in our previous article about leaked iPhone prototype designs, the Apple vs. Samsung legal battle is resulting in a lot of never before seen information reaching the public through legal documents.

The latest bit of info comes regarding Samsung and how it was repeatedly warned against Apple's designs. One of the warnings came from Google themselves back in 2010, who noticed that Samsung's tablets ‘P1’ (Galaxy Tab) and ‘P3’ (Galaxy Tab 10.1) were “too similar” to the iPad and demanded “distinguishable design vis-à-vis the iPad for the P3.” Google even asked Samsung to make the tablets noticeably different, starting from the front side.
Another interesting things is that Samsung's own Product Design Group also noted in 2011 that it is “regrettable” that the Galaxy S “looks similar” to the older iPhone models.

Swipe Telecom Launches Three 7" Android 4.0 Tablets, Ranging From Rs 6000 To Rs 9000

California-based Swipe Telecom has launched a range of tablets for the Indian market. The lineup includes three slates: the 3D Life Tab X74 3D, Halo Tab X74S, and Float Tab X78.

The Android 4.0 based 3D Life features a 7" multi-touch capacitive screen with pixel dimensions of 480x800. Powered by a 1.2 GHz Cortex A8 CPU, a Mali-400 GPU, and 512 MB of RAM, the tablet offers 4 GB of internal storage with a 16 GB microSD slot. Connectivity options include inbuilt Wi-Fi and 3G via an external dongle, but GPS is absent. The 3400 mAh battery claims to offer a minimum playback time of five hours for 1080p video. Other features include a 2 mp main camera, Flash 10.1 support, USB OTG port (for connecting accessories), and a 3.5 mm audio jack. The slate is 3D-capable and comes bundled with 3D glasses. However, the nature of the 3D content included with the device hasn't been specified. The 3D Life is available in black and is priced at Rs 6000.
Next, the Float Tab X78 is powered by a 1.5 GHz CPU, a Mali-400 GPU, and 512 MB of RAM. Running Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), this 7" multi-touch tablet measures 7.6" (l) x 4.8" (w) x 0.3" (8.5 mm) (d) and tips the scales at only 295 grammes, making it India's "slimmest and lightest tablet", according to the manufacturer. It also features a 2 mp front-facing camera, Wi-Fi, 3G support via an external dongle, mini-USB 2.0 port, 3000 mAh Lithium-polymer battery, and 8 GB of internal storage that can be further expanded via a 32 GB microSD slot. It also claims to supports several video and audio formats, and comes preloaded with games and utility apps, including Olive Office Premium. This tablet is priced at Rs 7000 and comes in the Champagne Gold colour. It has to be mentioned that Swipe has compared the Float Tab against the Apple iPad 2, listing one of its "disadvantages" as "No support to google market". Either it's being really cheeky, or really ignorant — you decide which.
Finally, the 7" Halo Tab also runs ICS and is powered by a 1.2 GHz Cortex A8 CPU, a Mali-400 GPU, and 1 GB of RAM. It packs in 4 GB of internal storage that can be further expanded by up to 16 GB via the microSD slot. It is differentiated with the previous two products by its HDMI-Out capability and a SIM card slot, which lets you use it as a mobile phone. Other features include a 1.3 mp front and 2.0 mp main camera, Wi-Fi, 1080p video playback, Flash 10.1 support, USB OTG port, and 3.5 mm audio jack. GPS support is missing in this tablet too. The device features a 3800 mAh battery that offers a minimum running time of five hours. Available in black and white variants, the Halo Tab is priced at Rs 9000.

How to avoid having naked photos stolen by hackers

Mila Kunis, the star of movies such as "Black Swan" and "Friends with benefits", is the latest celebrity to be making the headlines over allegations that hackers broke into her mobile phone and stole nude photos.

In the wake of the story about nude photos of Scarlett Johansson, several gossip websites have reported that they were contacted by people offering to sell them pictures stolen from Mila Kunis.

In Kunis's case, the images are said to have been taken from her mobile phone, and apparently show her "Friends with benefits" co-star Justin Timberlake lying on a bed topless, wearing some pink underwear on his head, and an image of Mila Kunis in the bath.

A fourth explicit image is said to feature an intimate part of a man who cannot be identified because his err.. head is out of the frame.

It's also alleged that private SMS text messages between Kunis and Timberlake are available on the internet.

Clearly, there's a continuing theme of celebrities having nude photographs of themselves leaked onto the internet - whether to publicise their careers or latest movies, or to make money for those who stole the images

Sprint Galaxy Nexus update removes local search function

As reported earlier today, Sprint began rolling out an update for the Galaxy Nexus phone. Likely requiring a few days to reach all devices, the update modifies the received signal strength indicator (RSSI), adds support for Sprint TV, and adjusts LTE settings to default to “on.” The update does a little more than that though – it removes local search capability.

For those jumping into the saga at this point, the local search capability refers to the ability to search contacts or files on the phone using the same search box one would use to do a search of the web. This capability has become the focus of a legal battle involving Apple, who obtained a preliminary injunction blocking sales of the Galaxy Nexus. The solution for carriers and the manufacturer, Samsung, has been to disable local search until the litigation is resolved.

Followers of the lawsuit are probably not surprised by this move by Sprint. They may be surprised that Sprint did not disclose this part of the update.

The 9 mm thin slate with a front VGA camera can also function as a netbook with the bundled keyboard; will be available across India next week.

intex has launched a new low-cost tablet, the i-Buddy, running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and powered by a 1 GHz CPU with Mali 400 GPU and 512 MB of system RAM. It is currently listed on Snapdeal.com at Rs 6500. Although there is no mention of the free bundle on the website, the rep assured me that it will indeed be shipped along. Here are the full specifications:

Jail for man who tricked women into taking hacked webcams into shower

For a long time perverts and cyberstalkers have been getting kicks out of secretly snooping on female victims via webcams.

There's clearly a type of man (sorry for being sexist, but all the examples I have found online have male culprits) who gets a thrill out of secretly spying on young women in their bedrooms.

In the most harrowing cases young women are actually blackmailed into posing naked by hackers threatening to distribute compromising photos.

Hacking experts find new ways to attack Android phones

(Reuters) - Hacking experts on Wednesday demonstrated ways to attack Android smartphones using methods they said work on virtually all such devices in use today, despite recent efforts by search engine giant Google to boost protection.
Experts showed off their prowess at the Black Hat hacking conference in Las Vegas, where some 6,500 corporate and government security technology workers gathered to learn about emerging threats to their networks.
"Google is making progress, but the authors of malicious software are moving forward," said Sean Schulte of Trustwave's SpiderLabs.

Nexus Q Stock Sold Out? Once Again Shipping in 2-3 Weeks

by Stacy Bruce
tagged , ,

It was only a couple days ago that Google’s Nexus Q was finally listed as “in stock” from the Google Play store and in a blink of an eye she’s gone again. Whether the demand was so high that stock was drained almost overnight or there was some sort of production glitch, either way, the social media streamer is once again listed as shipping “soon.”  If you have been holding out on ordering a new Nexus Q it looks like you are going to have to wait another 2-3 weeks for shipping if you decide to bite the bullet any time soon. In the meantime, if you haven’t made up your mind on whether or not the Q is for you, you should check out our full hands-on review and we’ll be sure to let you know once more stock becomes available.

LAS VEGAS -- A year ago this week, Microsoft announced a startup-style contest with serious reward money called BlueHat to get security researchers to apply their expertise to innovative defenses. Today, the company revealed that the efforts of one of the three BlueHat finalists would be incorporated into their Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit tool.
Mike Reavey, the senior director of Microsoft's Security Response Center, explained that the BlueHat contest process was a big win for Microsoft. "In less than a year, we were able to solicit for ideas, receive them, implement them, and get them to customers," he said during a phone call with CNET last week.
The new version of EMET, as the tool is known, will soon ship with Return Oriented Programming (ROP) defenses "inspired" by the work of BlueHat finalist Ivan Fratric, Microsoft said in a press release announcing the tool upgrade. "ROP is an advanced technique that attackers use to combine short pieces of benign code, already present in a system, for a malicious purpose," Microsoft explained.

YouTube asks users to post real names for commenting

YouTube is pushing its notorious commenters to name themselves.

When you comment on, or upload a video, YouTube will now urge you to “start using your full name on YouTube,” and ask if the video-sharing site can begin displaying the identity you’ve associated with your Google+ account (assuming you use Google’s social network). If you decline, Google makes you select a valid reason, like “My channel name is well-known,” as BetaBeat noticed this morning. (Google didn’t mention that wrinkle when it announced it would be rolling out this option.)

Defcon 20: Skillz, thrills for the whole hacker family

This year's hacker show has something for everyone, from hardware hacking and zero-day contests to con games and nerd-core rappers. Plus: Black Hat ropes in Apple to talk iOS security.

LAS VEGAS - You might not think that a hacker conference in Sin City in the summer is the best place to take the kids. But if you want them to learn some skills, know their digital rights and have some fun, I can't think of any place better. Oh, and there's some stuff for us big kids too.

Defcon, which turns 20 this year, runs Friday through Sunday, following the more corporate Black Hat conference, the newsy parts of which are tomorrow and Thursday.

Black Hat organizers had a rocky start to their week with a security issue of their own. One of their volunteers sent 7,500 attendees a suspicious e-mail that appeared to be a phishing scam. The message asked recipients to confirm a new password that supposedly had been requested and directed them to a dicey-looking URL. "We have reviewed the server logs, we know the user, host, and have spoken with the volunteer who has emailed each of you this morning," Trey Ford, general manager of Black Hat, wrote in a blog post, without saying exactly why it happened. "The email this morning wasn an abuse of functionality by a volunteer who has been spoken to."

Malware attack spread as email from your office's HP scanner

In these high-tech times, scanners and photocopiers aren't just dumb machines sitting in the corner of the office.
They are usually connected to the corporate network, and - in some cases - can even email you at your desk to save you having to wear out your shoe leather.
And it's precisely this functionality that we have seen cybercriminals exploiting today, pretending that their malicious emails in fact come from an HP scanner inside your organisation.
Here's a typical example of the emails we have been intercepting at SophosLabs:
Example of malicious email
Subject: Re: Scan from a Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 4952740
Message body:
Attached document was scanned and sent to you using a Hewlett-Packard I-56919SL.
SENT BY: SHERRIL
PAGES: 7
FILETYPE: .DOC [Word2003 File]
As you'll see in the next example, the precise wording (the names and numbers used) can vary from email to email. But each of the emails has the same file attached - HP_Document.zip.
Example of malicious email
So, what's in the ZIP file?
hp_page-1-19_24.07.2012.exe
Clearly that's not a scanned-in image - it's executable code.
In fact, it's a Trojan horse called Troj/Agent-XDD, capable of infecting your Windows PC and putting your computer data at risk.
Here's a list of some of the different subject lines we saw in this spammed-out malware campaign, in the just the course of a few seconds:
Some subject lines used by malicious email
We've seen malware spread as scans from HP devices in the past, but there has been a notable wave of malicious code spammed out using the disguise today - so be on your guard.
If you are one of the many people seeing this malware attack in your email today, please do not click on the attachment even if you are waiting for a scanned-in document to be sent to you. Instead, simply delete the email and your computer will be safe.

Amazon Kindle Fire To Be Reduced To $169 After Kindle Fire 2 Launches?

This is hardly a surprise, but DealNews is reporting that Amazon’s Kindle Fire will experience a price drop to $169 after the new Kindle Fire 2 launches later this year. Amazon has a history of keeping older kindles around, at lower price points, when newer ones are released. According to DealNews, the Kindle Fire 2 will slide into the $199 price point.

This tactic is similar to how Apple positions its older iPads and iPhones when new versions come out. The strategy allows one manufacturer to cover multiple price levels, increasing their potential audience.

Of course, Amazon is now forced to compete with Google’s popular Nexus 7 tablet, which is leaps and bounds ahead of the original Kindle Fire spec-wise but still costs just $199. Sales forecasts for the original Fire have already been cut due to the Nexus 7′s success. Reducing the original Fire to $169 and launching the Fire 2 at $199 would essentially allow Amazon to compete with the Nexus 7 on two fronts.

Looks like the era of low-cost and genuinely usable tablets is here, folks. This is the kind of competition that helps drive innovation. Even big bully and litigious Apple will be getting in the smaller tablet game with their rumored iPad Mini, but I doubt theirs will be under two bills.
